Last Saturday I got back on the bike after not riding for like six months.
And I loved it for more reasons than I’m going to state here. But primarily, the reasons I was so happy to be back in the saddle are:
- I love riding my bike. Nothing is more fun that pedaling and feeling the momentum of your own power.
- It’s great cross training for running. I get that it’s virtually the same motion, but you’re using a different set of muscles to do so.
- It’s built in interval training. If you’re riding outside, you are going to inevitably hit uphills and downhills. And while a good cyclist will pedal through a downhill, you’re not going to use the same power going downhill that you do uphill.
- It helps to build your strength and endurance by changing up your workouts from running to cycling.
- It’s a nice change. I’ll admit I get bored running at times and changing it to cycling once in a while reminds me that exercise isn’t just about health and getting faster/stronger, it’s also about having fun.
Of course, I forgot that after not being on the bike in forever and a day, the next day would be tough. And I wound up cutting by planned long run down by more miles than I care to admit.
But, onwards and upwards!
