In 2010 my friends and I sat in a movie theater to watch a documentary about The Mother of All Relays. Walking out of the theater I told them that one day I wanted to participate in the race. Subsequently I learned that it’s harder than it seems. Getting in is next to impossible unless you know someone that has a legacy team. And if you are lucky enough to get in, the logistics of renting vans, getting hotel rooms and getting around are next to impossible if you’ve never done it before. I was resigned that I would probably never do the relay.
Then, in 2014 I was lucky enough to be chosen by Nuun to be on one of two teams for the race. It was an awesome experience and while relays aren’t really my thing (as you can read from my review), the people I met, the bonding we did and the experience I had is one that I think every runner should have at least once.
This weekend, 12,600 runners will make their way from Mount Hood to Seaside Oregon covering a little under 200 miles in 36 legs. God speed runners, may the wind be at your backs (and the rain stay in the clouds).
