ING New York City Marathon/Philadelphia Marathon Training Log – 9/27/13

This week was a tough one for motivation.

Not sure what’s up.

I even wrote about my self-motivation earlier in the week, but regardless, it was tough to get out the door and keep my head in the game.

Maybe I need to make a new music mix for my iPod?

I vaguely remember a slump in training after the NYRR Marathon Tune Up last year, but I’m not sure.

Either way, I wound up taking off Monday AND Tuesday (unheard of), and then only running a few miles on Wednesday. Thursday and today I picked it up a little, but I’m not at the mileage for the week that I’d like to be at.

I need a race to motivate. And thank goodness the NYRR doesn’t let me down!

Sunday is The Bronx 10 Miler. This race is part of the Five Borough series which used to be the Half Marathon Grand Prix (a 13.1 race in each of the five boroughs throughout the year).

625510_10151669671087409_1728552206_nTwo years ago they changed Queens to a 10K and The Bronx to a 10 miler. There are still 131s in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island (for those of you keeping track).

If you run four out of the five races, you get guaranteed entry into the NYC Half the following year (not to be confused with the Manhattan Half which is part of the 5 Borough Series). Since I missed Manhattan this year, I need to run all of the rest. Well, I don’t need to, but I want to get into the NYC Half next year.

Clear as mud? Yeah, I know it can be confusing.

So my point was to say that I’m happy there’s a race to help motivate me this weekend.

According to my training schedule, I’m supposed to run 22 this weekend. Originally I wanted to run the 22 on Saturday and then do the race on Sunday. But some of my running partners can’t run Saturday so we’re going to tack on 12 after the race — run over the Madison Avenue Bridge and end in the park so we can have coffee at the regular place.
