ASICS Gel-NIMBUS 18

Fun fact, did you know that the name ASICS is an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano which translates as “a healthy mind in a healthy body?”

No? Well you do now.

And while I can’t confess to having such a healthy mind, I can report that my body, despite being sick the last couple of weeks with what may have been the flu or may have been a really bad cold and sinus infection is in pretty decent shape.

At the ASICS Showroom I got a sneak peek of the Gel Kayano for the 2016 NYC Marathon

So after dragging my body through the ASICS (all caps, remember, it’s an acronym) showroom a few weeks ago to check out all the new goodies for the coming season I got to take a pair of the Gel-NIMBUS home and strap them on my feet to see what I thought.

As might not come as a surprise, I kinda fell in love with them.

I’m one of those runners who’s lucky enough to be able to wear both stability and neutral shoes and these kicks fall squarely in the neutral/under-pronator category.

Now, they won’t be perfect for everyone since everyone’s foot is different, but I urge you to run, not walk, to your local running store and grab a pair to test out.

 The ASICS Gel-NIMBUS 18

This is the 18th incarnation of the Nimbus series and when you slip them on your feet, you can almost feel the years of R&D that went into developing them. I know, I know, that sounds a little like hype, but honestly these kicks are comfortable.

If you like a cushioned ride, these are the shoes for you. They’re kinda like running on little puffs of clouds, every foot strike to toe-off was mitigated by what ASICS calls its Impact Guidance System – which in plain English means that all the components of the shoe (FluidRide Midsole, Rear-foot and Forefoot Cushioning systems, FluidFit Upper, Heel Clutching System, etc., etc., etc.) work with your foot to help it land as it was meant to land.

The shoes weigh in at a healthy 11.4 ounces (there’s a lot of cushioning in there) and have what has become a typical 10mm drop (23mm at the heel to 13mm at the toe).

Wearing the ASICS Gel-NIMBUS 18 outside Central Park after my maiden voyage.

I’ve run a total of 72 miles in them so far and, despite being sidelined for the last two weeks, am looking for them to help me do some damage at the Brooklyn Half in less than a month.

Time will tell in regards to Brooklyn, but I do know that these kicks will be around for at least 350 if not 400 miles.

Let me know what you think!
