Marathon Training: Wk 5

in Black Toenail Chronicles

I’m now five weeks into marathon training.

Today I “ran” eight miles. And when I write eight, I mean I ran just about four and then ran/walked the rest.

Here’s my issue.

I can’t get out of my head.

I want to. I feel great at the start of my runs and then just about halfway through it was over.

I have no idea what to do about it.

I know this week was shit, work reared its ugly head and conspired with 90 degree days to kill my runs on Tuesday and Wednesday which means I didn’t get out for the first time until Thursday.

So I wound up running Thursday and Friday, I was gonna ride on Saturday, but then we had a family hike planned and my coach commented on my Sunday plan that he wanted me to have “fresh legs” so I decided to kill the ride.

And then the “hike” we planned turned into a walk.

I feel like the universe, my head and my lack of endurance are all conspiring against me.

I NEED HELP!!

The response I got from my running coach is priceless:

Thanks for reaching out. It’s important for me to have an honest appraisal from my athletes.

So, here are a few thoughts:

  • Slow down if you need to. I’d rather you run slower but continuously vs. starting a little to fast and then needing to walk.
  • Stop worrying about your pace for now. (I can picture you reading the previous bullet point and thinking “but that pace used to be easy”.
  • I believe it was the great philosopher, George Clinton, who said “free your mind and your ass will follow”. Believe me, I get it. And I don’t meant of make light of your worries. But part of my job is to do the worrying for my athletes. You run, I think. That’s not to suggest you’re not smart or capable. It’s clear that you are. I just don’t need you to worry right now.

Please continue to keep me posted. Please just think “left, right, repeat” for now. We are going to be fine.
